In my understanding, surface code decoders detect measurement error by noticing that a flip of syndrome cannot be matched to another flip. But to what extent does measurement error rate affect the logical error rate? Suppose we fix the two qubit gate error rate, how will measurement error rates shift the curve? Are there relevant papers or posts on this?

Are there simple equations that estimate this? Like 5dB/code distance used in Craig Gidney's calculation?

  • $\begingroup$ Note that estimate already implicitly includes measurement error as an assumption. If you had a 1e-3 characteristic error rate but no measurement error, you'd do much better than 5dB/dist. $\endgroup$ Mar 20 at 2:41
